The reason why these things never happen is because the governments and space agencies of the world don't want their projects to be "inexpensive." They want them to break the bank.

We need 4x GAIAs put in solar orbit around Jupiter or Saturn distance for greater parallax. Or Pluto for multi generational studies. And I say 4x because we need to look perpendicular to the ecliptic as well.

This was very informative. Had a crazy idea that with enough sophisticated sensors on a large asteroid you could use orbital speed to impact it with a small rock and then know what is inside it from the sensor data transmitted. I enjoy watching your show as everything else is doom filled crap. Kudos!

Honestly, since we are spinning through space and swinging around the milkyway center cluster and that is swinging around another center of deep space. Trying to determine what exactly to do with this tool to somehow get a seriously long look and be completely still. Because we are looking at several interactions of light reaching us from many billions of years away. Which means we've sped up and changed direction of Universe motion possibly a few to a great number of times since the light from distant regions was sparked in our somewhat general region of the Milky Way. And we are a stranger still to the history of this motion in an accurate depiction. If we could do this work and then swing the whole scope through time to an early point in Earth's creation physically, we'd be almost done guessing those answers.

Cait I think it would be easier to siphon matter off the Sun using star lifting and prevent it from dying since smaller stars last longer. You can then use that matter for building mega-structures.

The most undisclosed story is that China will claim sovereignty over the far side of the Moon AND not reveal the claim in 2024. After 2024, CCP will disclose a picture of something on the far side to substantiate the claim. Chinese authorities will assert that the claim of sovereignty is even more valid than the Nine-Dash Line claim.

Fraser did answer the question asked w.r.t. the lunar eclipse; but just to play devil's advocate... If we lived on the moon, we would presumably call it a solar eclipse when the Earth blocks the Sun - just as we now call it a solar eclipse when the moon blocks the Sun. So I'm going to give the questioner 1/2 credit since he was putting himself on the moon.

I keep hearing about primordial black holes that are the size of atoms. If I got that right how does something that small have enough mass that light can’t escape? What happens if it runs into say a large iron asteroid does it swallow up the asteroid, or does the mass of the asteroid overwhelm the black hole and cause it to evaporate?

I understand what you mean. I member all the blackhole trendy titles aboot CERN. If others can chime in - if I'm wrong in my attempt of an explanation. I personally doubt tiny Afro-Universe holes are a real thing. Have you seen shows that talk aboot what would happen if they are real and 1 entered a star or Earth ? I think the conscious is, we wouldn't know aboot it. Member Atoms are relatively full of empty space and Afro-Universe holes can only eat so fast and spit out jets of leftover matter shooting out from it's poles.

Entropy is also a law of the universe. An empire can only remain cohesive so long as communication is rapid throughout. As soon as a galactic empire exceeds a certain threshold of rapid communication it's most distant outposts will undergo entropy and fracture into different elements and eventually drop out completely from the original culture.

Earth is just a single data point. It is all we actually know and kind of all we can see. Anytime Mars, Luna or Venus are visited or measured in any fashion we get a slightly wider view beyond what Earth can teach us. We also have a non-earth celestial body within a few days of travel that we have done very little practical science on. We may know the largely what the moon is but science is about the details. The details could be far more interesting than we think or just help us refine the model used for prediction. Those observations allow for comparison.

@frasercain Just as the earth has periodic meteor showers due to its path around the sun, can the Gaia data tell us when in the solar system's galactic travel it might have experienced or will experience greater meteor collisions? The path around the black hole that is depicted and the discussion of the cluster passing through the milky way is suggestive that there may be points in our galactic orbit that may be more dangerous than others.

@Fraser Cain it's thought that you could detect a Dyson swarm around a star by its infrared. My question is, wouldn't it also be possible for an advanced civilization with a Dyson swarm to be able to harness the heat and therefore eliminate the infrared? Or would it not be possible to harness all of the energy from the Star including the infrared heat?

I think we are not special. The aliens are out there, living their lives on their planets. Their civilizations are "close" to the same age as ours. The Vers is just so fracking huge that alien radio bubbles have not reached us yet. The light reflecting off the pollution the aliens have spewed into their atmosphere has only travels a few hundred or thousand light years. That is not far. I think most aliens are not older than us because they live in the same Verse as us. Population 3 or 2 stars just are not metal enough to create life. Pop 1 stars can make life but that means that life still has to be relatively young in the universe. The aliens are out there... most of them are just working to get through their days... just like you. Someday in the very very far future signs of aliens will be all over the sky. Just not yet. Light is slow and the vers is big.

I never once assumed we would be trying to get samples of actual life, I thought we would be looking for signs of it! Such an interesting subject but I was not expecting one of the authors of the study! A friend of mine (who is not a scientist) heard about it and asked why? I couldn't give a moral explanation and apparently that's why people distrust scientists 😅 I love astrology and I love biology but the answers we got from that study didn't give us any groundbreaking or insightful information. I'm very surprised it was recent and got ethical approval. It might have lost us more support than it was worth!

A very interesting debate. We are a very young and immature species, we congratulate ourselves for our own primal stupidity. Wars, hating each other, over 4,000 religions were prepared to kill each other for, we still think it’s a great idea to destroy the planet that is our only home, and spend energy justifying the insanity to each other. Aliens might want to visit us just to show their kids what can happen when you’re a dumb arse. There is no reason for them to engage with us intellectually… Would you attempt to engage with a chimpanzee for a discussion on philosophy and physics?
